Sofitel New York Unveils a New Era of Luxury with Comprehensive Renovation

Sofitel New York, a beacon of contemporary French sophistication in Manhattan, has announced an extensive refurbishment project as part of its celebration of Sofitel’s 60th anniversary. This major initiative, spearheaded by CEO Maud Bailly, marks a transformative chapter for the brand, emphasizing its dedication to dynamic and refined luxury.

Scheduled to commence in late 2024, the renovation will encompass all areas of the hotel, including its 398 guestrooms, 51 suites, the Presidential Suite, and the iconic skyscraper One Bedroom Suites, renowned for their breathtaking skyline views.

The Terrace Suites, with their unparalleled vistas of the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings, will also undergo a makeover. The refurbishment extends to the lobby, meeting spaces, guest elevators, and corridors, with the public areas expected to be completed by Fall 2025.

For over two decades, Sofitel New York has epitomized the French art de vivre in the bustling heart of Midtown Manhattan. The current design, crafted by HBA San Francisco, blends Parisian Art Deco with the glamour of 1940s Manhattan.

The new designs will continue this theme, marrying Parisian elegance with New York’s urban vibrancy. Inspired by the impact of L’Art Décoratif on the city, the design will integrate Art Deco and Art Moderne motifs with French fashion influences, intricate detailing, and luxurious materials, creating a space of refined opulence. The color palette of black, gray, white, and gold will serve as a sophisticated canvas for vivid artworks and metallic accents, echoing the ethos of French luxury.

The hotel’s entrance will retain its original stonework, enhanced by black marble, wood, and gold accents. A large-scale art installation behind the bell desk will create a stunning visual contrast. The grand staircase foyer will feature a custom sculptural lighting installation inspired by a ballerina’s tutu, while the meeting and event spaces will showcase carpets influenced by Parisian fashion houses like Balmain and Gaultier.

To lead Sofitel New York into its next era, Dieter Schmitz has been appointed as General Manager. Schmitz brings over two decades of hospitality experience and a passion for rejuvenating luxury hotels. “I am thrilled to return to New York City during such an exciting time for Sofitel New York,” said Schmitz. “With an unbeatable location and forthcoming renovation, I look forward to introducing our future flagship property to the world. Our team is committed to excellence and creating personalized guest experiences.”

Sofitel aims for 100% of its hotels to be eco-certified by 2025 and for more than 30% of its general managers to be women by the end of 2025. “We are excited to announce the refurbishment of the iconic Sofitel New York in the same year as our 60th anniversary, marking a new era for Sofitel,” shares Bailly. “With around 26% of our global network undergoing or clearly committed to renovations, including Sofitel Legend The Grand in Amsterdam, and Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, we are actively elevating our guests’ experiences.”
