Kicking off this month, Four Seasons Resort Lanai is launching a captivating series of Moon Dinners, celebrating the moon and its full phases.
The first event, the Buck Moon Dinner, is set for July 21, 2024, coinciding with the summer’s initial full moon. This unique dining experience will be hosted poolside at Malibu Farm. Guests are welcomed at 5:30 pm with a Buck Moon Cocktail, a delightful blend of maple syrup, ginger ale, orange juice, and vodka, alongside appetizers like ahi wontons and watermelon goat cheese bites. Following this, a four-course meal awaits, featuring exquisite dishes such as butter-poached lobster with zhug and pork belly with charred fruit salsa, each paired with fine wines. With only 16 seats available, reservations can be made through Open Table, a travel professional, or the Lanai Experience planner.

A full moon occurs roughly once a month when the moon, positioned opposite the sun with Earth in between, is fully illuminated. Throughout history, many cultures have used the lunar cycle to mark time and seasons, guiding various activities. The Buck Moon derives its name from the period when male deer (bucks) start to grow their antlers. It is also known as the Hay Moon or Berry Moon, celebrating the peak of nature’s bounty. Upcoming events include a Harvest Moon Dinner on September 17 and a Hunter’s Moon Dinner on October 17.
For those eager to delve deeper into astral wonders, the Lanai Observatory is a must-visit. The observatory features a state-of-the-art telescope in a 25-foot diameter domed structure. Crafted by PlaneWave Instruments, the PW1000 telescope boasts a direct drive altitude-azimuth mounting system, standing 135 inches tall and weighing about 3,000 pounds. Guests can check the online calendar for a variety of activities, including:
Moon Nights: In a 30-minute session, guests use a high-caliber 1-meter telescope to observe the moon, guided by the Resort’s Love Lanai Cultural Advisors, who share its significance in ancient Hawaiian culture.
Observatory Day Tours: Complimentary tours offer a close-up look at the observatory’s two-story structure and its high-power telescope’s mechanics.
During the Kilo Hoku Experience, cultural advisors from Love Lanai impart ancestral knowledge of the stars, explaining how early Hawaiians and other Pacific peoples used celestial navigation. These advisors recount how ancient voyagers, as early as 400 AD, relied on their advanced star-reading skills to journey across the Pacific, eventually reaching Hawaii. Lanai’s minimal atmospheric and light pollution makes it an exceptional location for stargazing and exploring the night sky.
