Both internal and external environments significantly impact sleep, and guests at Sensei Lanai can experiment with various techniques. In the bedroom, they learn about sleep-supportive cues like light switch settings that modulate neuro-ocular signals to the brain, indicating it’s time to sleep. Guests can also participate in early morning movement classes designed to induce a sleep response later or evening meditation sessions for deep relaxation.

The resort’s top-tier Sensei Guides and practitioners offer personalized wellness sessions to improve sleep and reduce stress, focusing on each guest’s unique needs. These sessions often incorporate data from wearables or lifestyle insights to tailor recommendations. Sensei’s philosophy of “Move, Nourish, Rest” underscores the idea that healthy sleep results from informed choices throughout the day. A Sleep 1:1 private session reviews daily routines and behaviors to enhance sleep quality, covering evening wind-down techniques and optimizing the sleep environment, including minimizing distractions and adjusting lighting and temperature.

This session employs evidence-based techniques for behavioral change and personal reflection. It begins with a review of the guest’s experiences, data, and wellness goals, followed by the application of expert knowledge to provide resources for better sleep. Sensei’s Wellness Science division relies on 85 peer-reviewed research articles to inform its training. Topics include sleep behavior and duration, circadian rhythms, disordered sleep, and the effects of exercise, nutrition, caffeine, alcohol, and stress. This research is distilled into practical techniques that Mindset Guides personalize for each guest.

The Rest and Recovery program, which features a Sleep 1:1 session, spans five days. Guests collaborate with the Sensei team to assess their physical and mental state, learn stress management techniques, and reframe their movement, nourishment, and rest practices. Using data from a complimentary WHOOP 4.0 band provided pre-arrival, Sensei Guides interpret key biomarkers like sleep stages, heart rate variability, and evening heart rate to craft a tailored itinerary.

While personalized tips are provided, common sleep themes include optimal wake times, sleep environment optimization, strategies for falling asleep, sleep regimens, and structuring the day for better sleep. Research indicates that habit formation varies, but noticeable changes often occur after 20-30 days of consistent practice. The Rest and Recovery Program includes two virtual follow-up sessions, and guests can book additional My Progress virtual sessions to evaluate and refine their practices. For instance, one guest experienced profound improvements in restfulness by setting a regular wake time and engaging in five minutes of morning breathing exercises. Another guest found that a nightly 10-minute journaling exercise reduced nighttime awakenings and improved sleep quality.

For those just beginning to explore sleep improvement, the 30-minute group session Dream On: Navigating the Challenges of Sleep is part of the complimentary weekly class schedule. This session includes a questionnaire and open discussion about sleep obstacles and various tools to enhance sleep quality and quantity.

Couples can enjoy Evening Hale Time, a relaxing end-of-day experience featuring the spa hale’s amenities, including an infrared sauna, steam shower, ofuro bath, outdoor rain shower, and soaking tub. Available at 7:00 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, this session also includes gourmet refreshments and snacks.
