Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is making waves in marine conservation by becoming the first resort in the Indian Ocean to establish a seagrass nursery.

The project will take root in the resort’s Barachois, a shallow saltwater lagoon already home to over 200 fish, as part of the broader Blue Carbon Ecosystems Project.

Led by the Odysseo Foundation and supported by a network of conservation partners and French funding under the Varuna Program, the initiative aims to restore seagrass meadows—vital ecosystems that help capture carbon, support biodiversity, and protect coastlines.

The nursery will grow seagrass species like Syringodium isoetifolium and Halodule uninervis from both wild-collected seeds and transplants. Seeds will first be nurtured in controlled lab conditions before being transferred to the Barachois to mature.

Once established, these meadows are expected to offer a healthy habitat for turtles, seahorses, rays, and fish, while also acting as natural carbon sinks.
