IHG Hotels & Resorts Expands Portuguese Portfolio with Nearly 1,000 New Rooms

04.06.24 (London, UK) – IHG Hotels & Resorts (IHG), one of the world’s foremost hotel companies, is delighted to announce the signing of nine hotels across Portugal, adding 976 rooms to the country’s robust and rapidly expanding pipeline.

This expansion includes properties under IHG’s luxury and lifestyle brands, such as Kimpton Lisbon, Hotel Indigo Albufeira, and Hotel Indigo Faro, as well as its Essentials Collection, which encompasses six new Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels.

Portugal, a priority market for IHG, has experienced remarkable growth recently, marked by brand debuts like the openings of Vignette Collection Casa da Companhia and Vignette Collection Lisbon Convent Square, and the signing of Kimpton Algarve São Rafael Atlántico, slated to open in 2025.

Essentials Collection Signings

Four Holiday Inn Express properties have joined the Portuguese pipeline, offering essential amenities for a comfortable and peaceful stay, including free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities, and the Express Start Breakfast with hot, fresh options, ideal for guests seeking a simple, smart travel experience.

  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites Lisbon – Amoreiras: Owned by Real Hotels Group, this 192-room converted hotel in Amoreiras will open in early 2025. Located within walking distance of major city attractions and in one of Lisbon’s financial districts, it will be perfect for both leisure and business guests.
  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites Portimão: This 60-room hotel, owned by Harland & Poston Group, is set to open in the first half of 2025. Situated in a popular tourist destination in the Algarve, it will be close to the marina and numerous beaches.
  • Holiday Inn Express Porto – Boavista: Opening in the second half of 2024, this 91-room hotel in Porto’s Boavista neighborhood, a collaboration with Mercan Properties, will be near the city center, airport, and key tourist spots, making it an ideal location for all travelers.
  • Holiday Inn Express Évora: Scheduled to open in the second half of 2024, this 76-room hotel, also with Mercan Properties, will be converted from a historic building. Located in a key secondary city, it will be ideal for business and leisure travelers.

Two additional Holiday Inn properties have been signed in Portugal, offering the brand’s hallmark “Kids Stay & Eat Free” program and open lobby concept:

  • Holiday Inn Braga: Owned by Soliteight Hotel Projects SA, this 114-room hotel, set to open in the second half of 2024, will be one of the few branded hotels in Braga, known for its religious history and summer festivals.
  • Holiday Inn Beja: Owned by Mercan Properties, this 95-room hotel will open in the second half of 2024. Located within the medieval walls of Beja Castle and near the main highway connecting Lisbon to Spain, it will quickly become a top destination with its year-round warm climate and diverse attractions.

Luxury & Lifestyle Collection Signings

  • Kimpton Lisbon: Signed earlier this month, the 141-room Kimpton Lisbon, the first Kimpton-branded property in Lisbon, will open in early 2026. This hotel will feature high-quality finishes and seasonally-inspired dining options, benefiting from proximity to key tourist attractions.
  • Hotel Indigo Albufeira: This 80-room hotel in the Algarve, signed with Mercan Properties, will open in mid-2025. It will offer a rooftop pool and bar, and a restaurant featuring local produce, making it a prime destination for leisure travelers.
  • Hotel Indigo Faro: Signed in 2023, this 127-room hotel, also with Mercan Properties, will open in late 2026. Located in front of the Marina in central Faro, it will offer stunning views of the lagoon and marina from its rooftop.

IHG currently operates 20 hotels in Portugal across seven brands, including Six Senses, InterContinental, Vignette Collection, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Iberostar, with a strong pipeline of 15 more hotels.
